European Federation Associations Microdentistry
The European Federation Associations Microdentistry was founded in 2003 to represent the national Associations of Microdentistry from different European countries on the European level. The founding associations of the EFAM have been the Italian Academy of Microdentistry, the Francophonian Society of Microdentistry (France, Belgium) and the Spanish Association of Microdentistry. Trough the years, also the Associations of Microdentistry from Germany and Poland did join the European Federation.
What is Microdentistry:
Dentistry is the branch of the medical field concerning the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of oral and dental pathologies. In order to treat compromised teeth Dentists have to perform sophisticated procedures in the small environment of the oral cavity often dealing with fine and delicate anatomical structures. Conventional treatment performed without magnifying systems often presents limitations due to lack of adequate visibility and capability to identify and thus properly treat small critical details.
Dental Procedures performed under the high Magnification and Illumination provided by the Operating Microscope are treatments of the highest precision and represent the current state of Clinical Excellence in Dentistry. Literature and clinical evidence show that the outcome of microscope-assisted treatments is definitely superior compared to conventional treatments in many cases. The first dental specialties to adopt the Operating Microscope were those dealing with the treatment of finest details, like Endodontics.
Clinicians realized that the advantages of Magnification and Illumination are actually applicable to many different dental procedures, in Endodontics as well as in Restorative Dentistry, Esthetic Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery and even Implantology. All these Microscopic procedures greatly differ from the conventional ones performed without magnification systems, thus the need to refer to the new term of Microdentistry.
Microdentistry Operators soon felt the need to share their clinical work, ideas and findings. This need is expressed by the constitution of Microdentistry Associations (i.e.: Italian Academ of Microdentistry, Francophonian Society of Microdentistry [France, Belgium], the Spanish Association of Microdentistry, Studiengruppe fϋr Mikroskopie in der Zahnheilkunde [Germany]). The increasing use of the Operating Microscope in Clinical Practice did imply active sharing of information among Microscope users and settled the need for International Congresses. The EFAM organizes an International Congress in one of the Member-countries, regularly.
